An almost full turn out to this sortie to Syston in Leicestershire. Systonis a village to the north of Leicester off the main A46 and served by the
Midland Main Line railway. We all met at the Midland Railway pub, the majority clientele seemingly women out for a good time. It was a shame when
we eventually had to leave for our table which was booked at The Spice of
India for 9:30pm.
The Spice of India is adjacent to the railway station. Parking appeared to be limited to on road parking only. The interior was of modern appearance
with well spaced tables and seating and a large conservatory to the right. Despite booking well in advance, we had to wait a considerable time for our
table and were escorted to a bar area on the first floor for drinks. I may be a little cynical, but I suspected a ploy to extract maximum cash from us
through pre- meal drinks. We eventually received starters 40 minutes after the booked time, and there was a longer than average wait time for the main
course.
On a more positive note, the menu was very extensive, and the manager was prepared to be flexible enough to provide a variety of dishes for £12 a
head. Each starter had a combination of three items, and the main course consisted of 10 plus dishes, rice and nan. Overall, the quality of food was
very good with plenty for £12 per head, more than making up for the time we
had to wait for our table and main course.
In summary:
Plus points
* Interior clean, tasteful, and pleasant environment
* Food of very good quality, and plentiful for the price per head
Minus points
* Had to wait longer than average for table and courses
*Overall rating - 4 chillies - would have been 5 if not for the long wait for
tables and courses.
